A museum dedicated to the sea gypsies of Phuket is set to open on the island.
A museum dedicated to the life and culture of the sea gypsies living in Phuket is set to open in the city.
Located on the island of Koh Sireh and easily accessible from Phuket, the centre is due to open before the arrival of the next high season for visitors.
To date, a number of buildings which will be used to house the exhibits have already been constructed on the island and have been crafted to resemble upturned boats.
The gypsies are the Urak Lawoi people and comprise of around 6,000 aboriginal Malays who live in a number of locations along the coast of western Thailand who speak a form of Malay mixed with Thai.
While the sea gypsies have been living off the coast of the island for years, there is not much contact with them and they remain to be a fascinating subject for both the people living in Phuket and its numerous visitors.
