Chrissy Richman explained that the south-east Asian country makes for such a good choice of holiday because of the enormous variety it offers: landscapes ranging from beaches to mountains, with cities somewhere in between.

“People are usually warm and welcoming, and you don’t really need to take advantage of the bigger tourist attractions in order to have a good time – although some of them are worth saving for,” she said.
“Finally – and I’m biased because I live here – in Chiang Mai you will find hardly any market traders who are pushy and demanding – and they have some of the best and cheapest food anywhere in the world.”
