The WTTC believes India’s tourism industry has been performing well.

New figures have confirmed what everyone who has ever been on a holiday to India already knew – that tourism in the country is thriving.

Members of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) are currently meeting in the IndianInitiative Retreat in Kerala and the group revealed research by Oxford Economics has shown that the tourism industry in India is three times as big as the country’s automotive manufacturing sector.

David Scowsill, WTTC president and chief executive officer, said: “The numbers in this study are really insightful, demonstrating that travel and tourism plays a leading role by creating jobs, restoring economic growth and helping to eliminate poverty.”

He added that the Indian government has made real strides in recent years to promote the country as a holiday destination.

Initiatives include making it easier for travellers to obtain visas, as well as improving the infrastructure around key sites such as the Taj Mahal.
