Cape Town has been named as the World Design Capital for 2014.

Art lovers may be encouraged to take flights to Cape Town soon after the city was named as the World Design Capital for 2014.

The award was announced at the International Design Alliance Congress in Taipei in Taiwan and the city holds the distinction of being just the fourth to have won the accolade.

Cape Town’s win was noted to be particularly significant, as the year of the award will coincide with the 20th anniversary of democracy being declared in post-apartheid South Africa.

“2014 then is the moment when the past and the future will come together for Cape Town, in contemplation and in action,” said Patricia de Lille, executive mayor of Cape Town, during her acceptance speech for the award.

Travellers who are heading on flights to Cape Town a little sooner could decide to celebrate Halloween in the city by paying a visit to its forthcoming film festival.
