The plant and marine life of Dubai could be set to thrive soon following an announcement that artificial reefs are to be created.

Travellers taking flights to Dubai could soon be able to see a whole range of plant and marine life swimming in its waters following news that an artificial reef is to be created.

Dubai-based real estate developer Nakheel has announced it is to build 500 reefs off the coastline of the emirate in an attempt to stimulate the region’s aquatic life.

It explained that the steps are necessary, as the construction of its projects, including the Palm Jumeirah and The World, resulted in the loss of some of the original fishing grounds.

“This project will not be a big financial burden as most of the materials are with us,” said Ali Rashid Lootah, chairman of Nakheel.

More people could be planning to take flights to Dubai in the coming weeks, as a study by holiday property rental company Campaya found that it was the most popular location for winter sun breaks.
