Anyone planning holidays to Australia may be interested to know that Sydney has topped the list of Brits’ most popular overseas cities.

Sydney has been crowned favourite overseas city by Guardian, Observer and Guardian online readers in the newspapers’ 2009 travel awards.

Cape Town in South Africa took second place, while New York, San Francisco and Berlin completed the top five.

More than half of all of Australia’s international visitors take a trip to Sydney, with over 2.6 million people spending time in the city in 2008.

Over 19,000 people cast their votes in the survey, which asked for opinions across a variety of categories.

Australia did not make it into the list of favourite long-haul countries, with that accolade going to neighbouring New Zealand.

However, the Great Barrier Reef was featured in the favourite overseas tourist attraction. The natural spectacle took fifth place behind the Iguazu Falls on the Brazilian/Argentine border, Angkor Temple Complex, Machu Picchu and the Grand Canyon national park.
