Travellers thinking of staying close to home for a winter break are being urged to reconsider the long-haul option.
Long-haul holidays can offer the best value for money, according to one travel company.
Holidaymakers looking at breaks in Europe are being advised to check all their options – such as cheap flights to Thailand and budget package deals – before booking.
David Carlaw, head of Faraway at Premier Holidays, said: “It doesn’t always pay to stay closer to home as long-haul destinations offer fabulous value for money and beneficial exchange rates.”
Premier Holidays has seen its sales of holidays to Thailand rise by 34 per cent year-on-year since April 2009.
In a survey carried out by the Post Office at the start of this year, Thailand was named the best value for money destination in the company’s long-haul barometer 2009.
South Africa was second place, while Malaysia, Kenya and Gambia completed the top five.
The research compared prices on a selection of products, ranging from a cup of coffee to a bottle of sun cream and the cost of a three course meal.
