Mandela Day on July 18th

On July 18th, South Africans will come together to celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day 2012.

Formally recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in 2009, Mandela Day is a celebration of the great man’s birthday, his life’s work and his charitable organisations.

The theme of the event is for everyone to give 67 minutes of their time, whether it’s supporting their chosen charity or serving the local community, in recognition of the 67 years Mandela spent fighting for human rights.

“Everyone can help change the world,” said Achmat Dangor, the CEO of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory.

“Each individual has the ability to make the world around him or her a better place. One small step, when you add them all together, can become a global movement for good.”

Mandela Day began after the anti-apartheid campaigner’s hugely successful 90th birthday celebrations in 2008, which were held in London’s Hyde Park.
