South African Airways (SAA) has announced plans to offer direct flights to Johannesburg from New York.

Starting in May, the non-stop flights are a response to increased demand from passengers and will allow travellers to catch further connections to destinations across the US.

Theunis Potgieter, SAA’s general manager, explained: “Our non-stop flights to New York will allow a full day in Johannesburg with an early morning arrival in New York.

“The reduced travel time result in fast and efficient connections to several key US destinations such as Boston, Chicago, Florida, California, as well as Canada and the Caribbean.”

The new flight will fly from Johannesburg’s Tambo International Airport daily and land at New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport.

SAA also confirmed that it plans to introduce high-capacity craft on its flights to Johannesburgfrom Nairobi, Kenya and Namibia.

The airline currently uses a mix of Airbus A319s, A340s and Boeing 737s.
