Travellers booking flights to Bangkok may be pleased to hear that one journalist has called the city the ‘best shopping destination in Asia’.
Bangkok has been described as the best place to go shopping in the far east by Adriaane Pielou.
Writing for the Daily Telegraph, she claims that Bangkok’s range of luxury as well as everyday shopping opportunities makes it the top retail therapy choice in the region.
Ms Pielou recommends the extensive Chatuchak weekend market as a good starting point. One of her tips for a successful trip is to pick up a map from the information desk so that shoppers can navigate the 10,000-plus stalls and find what they are looking for.
Consumers looking for luxury goods are advised to visit the shops around the five-star hotels, where products found in Bloomingdales and Hamptons can be picked up for less than half the price of their American or British counterparts, according to the journalist.
Another of her top tips is to seek out the gem-selling stores on the Silom Road. Bangkok is known as the gemstone capital of the world and Ms Pielou believes that they are a best buy in the city.
Floating markets, such as Damnoen Saduak found to the south-west of the city, could also be of interest to tourists who want to experience a different retail environment.
