Bangkok is the best option for budget-friendly city breaks, according to new research.
A new study has revealed that people booking flights to Thailand can look forward to a cheap city break in Bangkok.
The Virgin Money Weekend Break Survey found that Bangkok reigns supreme when it comes to economical two-night stays, while New York is currently the most expensive city in the world for a short break.
Of the 20 destinations studied, the Thai capital worked out as the cheapest overall when the average cost of car rental, two nights in four-star accommodation, a trip to a popular tourist attraction, a Big Mac and a travel insurance policy was calculated.
“While going further afield might feel more expensive, tourists can recoup a lot of extra expense because of the value for money in cities once you arrive,” commented Grant Bather of Virgin Money Travel Insurance.
“A two-night stay in Milan is over three times more expensive than in Bangkok,” he added.
The cost for two nights in Bangkok came to £141.25, while Milan totalled £516.11 and New York was bottom of the budget-friendly list with £527.44.
Earlier this month, it emerged that plans to increase the passenger capacity at Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok to 80 million passengers by 2016 have reached an advanced stage.
