The number nine is a special one for the Thai culture – meaning that celebrations kicked off with style this week as the country saw 09/09/09.

It is likely that those on cheap holidays in Thailand saw some serious partying this week, as the country celebrated the lucky number nine on 09/09/09.

The figure is held dear by Thai residents as the word for nine also means ‘step’, representing progress, reports Channel News Asia. Furthermore, the country’s current King, Bhumibol Adulyadej, aged 82, is the ninth monarch of his dynasty.

At exactly 9.09am, people gathered all across the country and the capital Bangkok to sing the royal anthem.

A religious ceremony was also conducted outside of the city hall, reports MCOT News, as holidaymakers and locals gathered in Lumpini Park to sing alongside an orchestra.

In other Thailand travel news, the Bangkok Post reported earlier this week that attempts to cut down on illegal activity at Suvarnabhumi airport have resulted in the arrest of 750 unlicensed taxi and limousine drivers and 405 unauthorised tour guides.
