A new initiative has been launched to highlight the attractions of South Africa’s Western Cape region.Alan Winde, Western Cape’s minister for finance, economic development and tourism, believes the month of special events will promote the area’s varied tourist locations.

Speaking at the official launch event, Mr Winde encouraged people to “join a township tour or experience the Afrikaans Monument in Paarl; enjoy the quiet beauty and soothing sounds of the Knysna Forests or visit a mission station in the Cape Overberg”.

Those enjoying cheap flights to South Africa may also be interested to discover that the Western Cape tourism month coincides with Heritage Month this September. Other events happening in the region this month include the Laingsburg Marathon, the Miss Garden Route competition and the Wild Flower Shows in Caledon.

Western Cape’s main airport is Cape Town International Airport, which was voted Africa’s leading airport at the World Travel Awards in 2006.
