The Umm Royool will be restored to commemorate Dubai’s trading past.
Dubai is a holiday destination that has made great progress in recent years.
Out of the gulf sand some of the world’s most recognisable hotels such as the Atlantis and Jumeriah Beach have sprung up to meet the Arabian sky, but the emirate has not forgotten its history.
It is not surprising that shopping is one of the major pastimes in Dubai, as the emirate originated as a trading port back in the 1900s.
And even though lavish new designer-packed malls are commonplace, holidaymakers will soon be able to sample sights that must have greeted the first desert traders all those years ago as the Umm Royool tower is due to be rebuilt.
This is the nine-metre high gate that people had to leave their weapons behind when they entered the settlement that was to become Dubai.
“We will rebuild Umm Royool and it has to be in that location to keep its historical accuracy,” Rahsad Bukhash, the director of the historic architecture department at Dubai Municipality told The National.
