Qatar Airways has shown that it is beating the global economic downturn – by ordering three brand-new Boeing planes.

The Doha-based carrier is set to receive the three 777 aircraft by the end of 2008, which will offer a number of attractive functions for passengers.

In business class, the seats convert into 180 degree beds and each passenger has a 15-inch television screen.

Meanwhile, both business and economy classes offer touch-screen inflight entertainment.

Akbar Al Bakerm, Qatar Airways chief executive, said the purchases aim to expand the company’s international network.

“Our commitment to provide the travelling public with greater choice through more frequencies and more routes is unprecedented,” he commented.

Qatar operates services to a number of destinations, including flights to Cape Town and Johannesburg.

It is one of only six airlines given a five-star rating by Skytrax.

The carrier also operates the world’s first dedicated commercial passenger terminal for first and business class passengers at the Doha International Airport, according to the Korea Times.
