Auckland has been named as the third Fairtrade City in New Zealand.
Auckland has been named as the third Fairtrade City in New Zealand, following in the footsteps of Wellington and Dunedin.
In becoming a Fairtrade City, the city is pledging to offer more choice to residents and local businesses about the products they buy by making Fair Trade goods more readily available.
In addition, the council will offer only Fairtrade coffee and tea in its offices, to help boost demand for the products in the city.
There are now over 1,000 Fair Trade cities around the world and the announcement that Auckland is to join them comes just ahead of the start of Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from May 5th to 20th.
A global Fairtrade breakfast event will be held on May 12th.
Fairtrade Australia and New Zealand chief executive officer Stephen Knapp said: “This is great news for Auckland. New Zealand continues to be one of the world’s fastest growing markets for Fairtrade Certified products, with sales growing by 24 per cent to reach $45.4 million last year.”
