Airports in Miami

The Miami International Airport (Code: MIA) is the chief airport that serves the South Florida area. The airport is located approximately 13 km (8 miles) northwest of the Downtown Miami. The airport handles flights to cities throughout United States, Latin America and Europe. The Miami International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world and is a hub for American Airlines, Executive Airlines and Gulfstream International Airlines.

MIA has direct links to Miami-Dade Transit’s Metrobus network. Travellers also have convenient access to shuttle services, taxis and rental cars within the airport.

Best Time to Visit Miami

Winter (December-March) is the most popular time to visit Miami. Climate is pleasantly warm with a range of events and activities being organised during the peak season.

Winter, understandably, is also the most crowded season of the year and that results in spiralling hotel costs and rocketing airline ticket prices. April and May, and September to November are other excellent periods to visit Miami with most of peak season’s attractions but lesser costs.

For those looking for the best cheap deals and off season discounts, visiting the city in summers is the option. With lots of humidity and rainfall, Miami may not be the most enjoyable but it will certainly turn out to be the most cost-effective.

Getting Around in Miami

Miami features a comprehensive public bus system that covers the entire county and is also linked to the bus system in Greater Fort Lauderdale. Metro-Dade Transit’s buses are a great way to get an inexpensive tour of the region.

Metrorail, which is a single-line elevated rail system, is another major component of the public transport. Metrorail covers more than 22 miles with over 20 stations.

In addition, the region of Downtown Miami is served by a free of charge Metromover, which is an elevated people mover system.

Miami Travel Tips

Miami is notorious for being the centre of crime and drug smuggling activities. There are certain areas in the city that must be avoided by tourists at all times.

Overtown has the highest rate of crime in the city and must be avoided all together by travellers. Tourists should take basic precautions and use common sense to avoid any kind of unpleasant scene. Avoid wearing flashy jewellery and flaunting money, do not get into a conflict with any kind of group, stay close to high-traffic areas at night and be alert of your surroundings.

No particular vaccinations are mandatory to visit Miami. However, it’s best to be up-to-date with fundamental vaccinations, such as tetanus and hepatitis.

Health care in Miami is not cheap and British travellers are advised to opt for a comprehensive international health insurance.

Strong sun, mosquitoes and hurricanes are some of the potential natural dangers that a tourist must be aware of. It is recommended that travellers must keep a strong sunscreen and mosquito repellent handy in their bag.
