Unawatuna Beach
The tiny horseshoe shaped Unawatuna Beach draws both local and foreign visitors. Located 140km south of Colombo, the popular beach is known for its sea turtle population. Although ravaged by the 2004 Tsunami, the beach still stands as an ideal place to take a dip in the ocean or to simply enjoy a romantic walk on the sands. This popular beach has numerous resorts, hotels, restaurants, and small kiosks selling souvenirs and other essentials.
Hikkaduwa Beach
Known for its uniformity, Hikkaduwa beach is another famous beach in Sri Lanka. This popular low-lying beach is stunningly beautiful and offers a world of adventurous activities to visitors. Talk about sunbathing, scuba diving, snorkelling, coral reef surfing, or anything else; Hikkaduwa is just the perfect place to experience the sun, sand, and the surf. Visitors can also enjoy a sumptuous range of authentic seafood.
Arugam Bay Beach
Located 317 km from Colombo, Arugam Bay Beach is famous for its surfing points. The highest point of the beach, Arugam Bay point is the tip of the bay where the waves can rise as high as 5 to 10 metres depending on the ocean conditions and swell. Interestingly, the popular beach has been identified as the best surfing beach in Sri Lanka and the fourth best in Southeast Asia.
Bentota Beach
Situated 40 miles south of Colombo, this long sandy beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka. Visitors can enjoy a quiet stay in the nearby resorts or indulge in water sports such as deep sea fishing, kayaking, canoeing, snorkelling, and deep sea fishing to name a few. Besides, if you have kids, make sure that you head to the famous Turtle Hatchery.
Negombo Beach
Located 7 km from Bandaranaike International Airport and 37 km from Colombo, Negombo beach is an ideal beach town. Visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the setting sun or stroll along the shore’s little shops selling souvenirs and other essentials. While on the beach, you can indulge in numerous water sports or other recreational activities and enjoy culinary delights at the oceanfront restaurants.
