Popular Attractions in Sukhothai
Once the capital of Siam, Sukhokthai is home to a number of temple ruins and historical places. It has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the abundance of wats and other historical monuments. Sukhothai in Thai means “Dawn of Happiness” which suggests that the Sukhothai period must have been a “golden age” in the history of Thailand. If you love to explore the history and culture of different places and are planning a trip to Thailand, visiting Sukhothai is a must. Have a look at some of the popular attractions in Sukhokthai.

Sukhothai Old City

Sukhothai Old City has been recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of the various ancient monuments which reflect the colourful and legendary history of Thailand. There are about 200 ruined temples here. Some of the temples have been refurbished and give an insight into how the capital was like centuries ago. Old moats and walls in the old city centre smack of a bygone era. While buying your entry tickets, it would be a good idea to take a bicycle on rent. For any queries and concerns, you can also visit their information centre which is located in the complex itself.

Wat Sorasak

Wat Sorasak , one of the most beautiful monuments in Sukhothai, was built in 1412 CE. The chedi is guarded by 24 elegantly carved elephants and the niches have statues depicting a seated Buddha with his legs hanging down. The brilliant depiction makes it one of the highlights of the park. The guarding elephant-style has also been incorporated in other monuments around Sukhothai and the neighbouring Kamphaeng Phet.

Wat Si Chum

Prepare to get amazed and impressed while visiting Wat Si Chum due to its beautiful architecture and elemental design. The monument consists of a mondhop which is a cuboid standing on a pedestal. Inside the monument, you will find a massive statue of the seated Sukhothai-style Buddha known as Phra Achana. A bot, situated opposite the mondhop consists of thirteen columns made of limonite and worked upon with stucco. There is a small wiharnis at the north of this mondhop along with a building which has an image of the seated Buddha inside.
