AirAsia has confirmed that it will continue to offer cheap flights to Thailand and other destinations without introducing a fuel surcharge. The low-cost airline has opted to rely on increased passenger numbers and stronger marketing rather than re-introduce a charge to cover the growing cost of aviation fuel – the carrier originally removed the fuel surcharge in November 2008.

AirAsia is one of the region’s most popular budget carriers and flies to 62 destinations in Asia, Australia and Europe.

Kathleen Tan, regional head of commercial, AirAsia, said: “Our strong seat sales and successful ancillary income are enough to offset the rise in fuel price.

“As the people’s airline, our commitment is to give our guests more opportunities to fly with our affordable low fares.”

She added that many rival airlines have opted to increase their fuel surcharges but warned this could result in artificial revenue.

AirAsia was named SkyTrax’s Best Low-Cost Carrier and the Airline of the Year in 2009 and 2010.
