People booking holidays to South Africa should take the time to discover the country properly, a local travel expert said.

Tourists visiting South Africa should not restrict themselves to its best-known areas, according to a local tour operator.

Anton De Wit, reservations manager at Rhino Africa, has urged holidaymakers to the region to spend some time exploring the country outside its main urban hubs of Cape Town and Johannesburg.

“Come with an open mind. Give yourself enough time. There are beautiful areas to see between Kruger and Johannesburg,” Mr De Wit advised.

He added that, because South Africa’s main language is English, British tourists can easily travel around. He described the country as “very user-friendly”.

Figures published earlier this month by South Africa Tourism showed that the number of arrivals from the UK increased by 6.8 per cent in August this year compared with the same month in 2009.

The statistics revealed that more than 35,000 Brits had travelled to South Africa in that month alone in 2009.
