Travellers planning to take flights to South Africa and other destinations could be confused by the number of travel insurance policies on offer to them.
According to financial research company Defaqto, many consumers are overwhelmed by the differences in travel insurance cover and often find it hard to fit a policy that suits their needs.
Mike Powell, insight analyst for general insurance at Defaqto, explained: “There are so many differentiators in a travel insurance policy and people really need to take a little bit of time to look at what is available in the market and make sure that it fits their needs.”
Research conducted by the firm found that 81 per cent of policies do provide cover of £1,000 or more for personal belongings. However, just 11 per cent allow single items costing £350 or more – which means that many expensive gadgets such as cameras may not be fully insured.
Mr Powell added that it is vital that travellers make sure they look at all the details of cover and ensure that the policy they eventually opt for is suitable.
