Karoo National Park

Karoo National Park lies on the outskirts of the town and is home to the two most endangered species of South Africa; the black rhinoceros and the riverine rabbit. Both have been resettled successfully in the park. Karoo National Park also houses a variety of other animals, including five tortoise species, wild ostrich, mountain zebra and the native species of buck. The park also boasts a large number of avian species including Cape Eagle owl and different varieties of eagles such as black, booted and martial eagles.

Beaufort West Museum

In 1837, the first municipality and first town hall of South Africa was established in Beaufort West. At present, the town hall has been converted into the Beaufort West Museum. It is home to many superb displays, including the awards presented to Professor Chris Barnard who had performed the first successful heart transplant. The museum comprises of three buildings; Sendingpastorie, Sendingkerk and Stadthuis. Sendingkerk was built in 1871 as a Dutch reformed mission church by Reverend Adam Barnard. Later, his son Professor Chris Barnard became a professor and carried out the first heart transplant.
