An unusual bike tour around Cape Town has been chosen by the Times as one of the top ten quirky city tours available.
A cycling tour using recycled bikes to transport tourists around Cape Town has been selected by the Times as one of the top ten quirky city tours on offer in the world.
Rather than visiting the city’s townships from the comfort of an air-conditioned bus, travellers are being encouraged to explore on a bike with a local guide.
The trip takes tourists to Masiphumelele, near Noordhoek to the south of the city. Accompanied by a local guide, it allows visitors to the region to interact with the local community as well as ensuring that some of the money generated by tourism finds its way back to them.
According to the Times, the tours not only allow holidaymakers to give something directly to the local inhabitants, but will also help improve fitness levels.
The day-long tour takes in craft workshops as well as an environmental centre.
Cycling tours around vineyards across the country are offered by the same operator, as are African cooking classes.
