A new shopping centre in Chennai will cement the city’s reputation as a retail hotspot.
Chennai is already something of a shopping destination – with thousands of sq ft of retail space offering everything from designer fashion brands to high-tech gadgets.
The recently launched Ramee Mall has been extremely popular among travellers and locals alike and several more shopping centres are set to crop up over the next two years – including Forum in Vadapalani, Marg Junction Mall on OMR and the Grande in Velachery.
As well as these sizeable new shopping centres, Chennai Market City, which is being developed by Mumbai-based Phoenix Malls will added two million sq ft of shops in what is set to be the city’s biggest retail development.
Market City will even have an area dedicated to luxury, international brands, which is bound to entice people with cheap flights to Chennai.
Speaking to the Times of India, S Ramaswamy, associate director of the RECS Group, said: “There is a large scope for organised retail in Chennai. The city is still behind other metros and so mall developers are rushing in to tap the huge potential here.”
As well as shopping, Chennai has a huge array of historical landmarks for visitors to take in – including the Basilica of the National Shrine of St Thomas and Sri Ramakrishna Math – Universal Temple.
