It seems foreign tourists are finally taking a shine to India’s northeast region. Hitherto, this part of the country hasn’t been able to persuade many foreigners to grab flights tickets and land here. But it all seems to be changing now. As per a news report in Times of India, nation’s leading daily, the number of tourists, both domestic and international, grabbing flights headed for the northeast has gone up dramatically in the past year. While there has been a 20%-29% more foreign tourist arrivals in Manipur, Tripura and Nagaland, the number of domestic travellers to Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland has seen a 36%-41% increase.

As mentioned, till recently, these states were generally rated low on the priority scales of not only foreigners who booked air tickets to tour India but even keen domestic travellers. Concerns regarding availability of flights and security remained and travellers preferred to book tickets on flights for much traditional holiday destinations of India like Goa and Kerala.

But government initiatives and the availability of attractive travel packages for the area have encouraged vacationers to opt for holidays here. The authorities have eased, of late, the protected area permit (PAP) that was obligatory of foreigners heading for Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram.

Experts also believe that cultural festivals and events in the north east are also encouraging a lot of foreign and Indian vacationers to consider booking flights tickets for the region.
