The proportion of single people flying to a long-haul destination, such as for a holiday in India, has risen significantly over recent years, a research company has revealed.

Some one in eight holidays to India and other long-haul destinations are taken by travellers who are visiting on their own, according to a study by Mintel.

Couples’ holidays have also become more popular, accounting for 40 per cent of all holidays taken over the last five years.

Tom Rees, senior travel and tourism analyst at the company, said: “[Couples] have the freedom to go away which they have always had but now they have the means and opportunity to go on holiday.”

He explained that the increase in availability of cheap flights and low-cost airlines has made it easier for people who are more flexible – such as single people and couples – to get away and take a holiday.

Mintel estimate that some five million people in the UK will take a solo holiday this year.
