There is a political and commercial drive to make Indian tourist sites more accessible in the future.
India has some of the most spectacular landmarks on the whole planet and as part of its current drive to make it possible for more people to experience them it is cleaning things up.
Oil firm ONGC will join forces with the a new campaign to help with the upkeep of a number of major tourist sites, including the Taj Mahal and the Konark Temple.
“ONGC has expressed its willingness to join the Clean India campaign and take up six tourist destinations across the country as part of their corporate social responsibility,” said a senior Tourism Ministry official.
Other sites include the Khajuraho Temples, Ajanta-Ellora Caves, Bodhgaya and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal.
There were 6.29 million foreign tourists who headed to India to see these and other amazing sites during last year, but the Tourism Ministry believes the country has even greater potential.
The authority envisages a target of 12 per cent growth rate in foreign tourist arrivals and domestic tourist visits during the next five years.
