Tamil Nadu officials are looking to attract even more visitors to the state’s attractions

Chennai and its surrounding Tamil Nadu state is becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination for people wanting to sample the Indian experience.

According to the state’s Tourism Department, since 2005, Tamil Nadu has seen its number of tourists treble to the point where 42.6 million people visited in 2010.

Some of the star attractions include Chettinad House and lots of festivals, as well as the stunning river swells and waterfalls of the Dhamapuri district.

This beautiful region is also home to the Theerthamalai temple, which is dedicated to Shiva.

Despite this recent boom in popularity, state officials want to attract even more people to see sights such as these.

The Hindu reports that Tamil Nadu officials are keen to improve the road networks and travel infrastructure in the region and implement a number of deals with overseas universities as the region is already a major attraction to theology students.

As well as upgrading the airport, they also hope to increase the number of bilingual guides in Chennai and the rural parts of the state.
