Springtime is the season when coral spawns at Ningaloo Marine Park in Western Australia and divers flock there every year.

An amazing natural phenomenon, a few days after the full moon, the coral releases thousands of eggs and sperm into the water.

The eggs are then fertilised and drift down to the sea bed as larvae, where they attach themselves and grow to form adult coral polyps.

However, the eggs also attract krill, which in turn lures in the majestic whale sharks for feeding.

These are the biggest fish in the marine world, but are harmless to divers and so came be swam alongside, providing a great photo opportunity and a tale to tell friends at home.

Exmouth’s (the closest place to Ningaloo) visitor website advises that night-time is best for diving with sharks and spawning coral.
