A Brisbane youth hostel has been hailed as the Best New Tourism Development at the Queensland Tourism Awards.
The new Brisbane City YHA received the accolade after the purpose-built accommodation opened earlier this year.
Situated near the centre of the city, the hostel boasts a rooftop swimming pool that overlooks the Brisbane River, a games room and air-conditioned dormitories and suites.
Its development cost AU$19 million (£10.5 million) and offers 372 beds.
Ralph Kajet, chief executive officer of YHA Queensland, commented: “YHA’s ambitious investment in the Queensland tourism industry is already paying off. Backpackers are spending more overnights in Queensland than in any other state.”
In Australia, the YHA has invested a substantial amount in the development of three flagship properties. The Sydney hostel, located in the city’s Rocks district, opened its doors in November.
The Melbourne Central YHA is located in an old Edwardian building near the city centre. It underwent a three-year renovation before welcoming its first guests in March this year.
