Fitzroy is a “bohemian enclave” packed with great art galleries and bars, right in the heart of Melbourne
If you want to find out about what Melbourne’s really all about, then head over to Fitzroy for a great mix of bars, music nights, art galleries and book shops.
Described by Visit Melbourne as the city’s “bohemian enclave”, Fitzroy has managed to hold on to its creativity despite undergoing gentrification in recent years.
Among the recommended stops are the trendy bars that line Smith Street, as well as the music and book shops on Brunswick Street. Head over to Johnson Street to see Melbourne’s Spanish side, with the Hispanic Fiesta well worth attending if you happen to be in town during November.
In Fitzroy, you’ll also find shops selling vintage clothing and locally-designed arts and crafts, perfect for a memento or two of your trip to the fantastic city of Melbourne.
There are great galleries in the area as well as notable street art and murals. Check out Brunswick Street Gallery, Sutton Gallery, Window99 and the Centre for Contemporary Photography if you have time.
Make sure to visit Fitzroy Gardens as well, where you can gaze on the impressive River God Fountain, a great example of local sculpture.
