Australia has been named as best holiday destination 2009 in the Telegraph’s luxury travel awards.

For the second time in three years, Australia has won the Ultratravel award for best destination, voted for by readers of the newspaper’s luxury travel magazine.

Commenting on the award, Telegraph journalist Graham Boynton said: “If I were to pick three cities that, in another life, I would like to live in, they would probably be Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne.

“Ultratravel readers have probably got it right.”

Mr Boynton thought the continent’s appeal stemmed from Aussie hospitality and the fact that Brits share the same cultural references, core sports and sense of humour.

He went on to say the climate, New World Wines, cuisine and the endless beaches were also a pull for British holidaymakers seeking a holiday in Australia.

Travellers flying to Australia in July may wish to head to Alice Springs to witness and enjoy the Imparja Camel Cup, camel races.
