“Leave it late to book for the best package deals – tour operators reduce prices close to departure dates,” he pointed out.

Although Mr Trend strongly recommended avoiding the peak travel times around the school holidays, he commented that the May half-term will be a cheaper time to travel than July and August.

Earlier this month, a survey published by revealed that many travellers are looking for a bargain this year – with 70 per cent of respondents stating that they are aiming to receive at least a 25 per cent discount on their holiday.

More than half of those surveyed also said that they are happy to spend more than three days shopping around to get the best deal on their break.
