Those searching for hotel rooms after booking cheap flights to Australia may be pleased to hear that they could be less expensive than they were a year ago.

Those booking cheap flights to Australia and planning a visit to Melbourne or Sydney may be pleased to hear that they could be set to save even more of their holiday money.

According to Hotels.com, the biggest drop in Australian hotel room rates during the first six months of 2009 occurred in Sydney.

The price of a room in the city was down by 30 per cent compared to the same period of 2008, the website’s statistics show.

Additionally, the figures found that renting a room in Melbourne cost 14 per cent less during this timeframe than it would have a year previously – potential good news for those booking cheap holidays in Australia.

Johan Svanstrom, managing director of Hotel.com for the Asia Pacific area, said that this “makes this region attractive to international visitors as long-haul inbound travellers will see lower hotel rates, helping to offset the perceived relative expense of getting there.”

Another reason why visitors are attracted to Sydney is because it is a “perennial favourite”, according to Wanderlust Travel magazine, whose readers who voted the city as one of world’s best.
