Melbourne is set to host the first performances of a new musical based on the story of King Kong.

People on flights to Melbourne who enjoy musicals could be looking to snap up tickets to a new musical based on King Kong.

The iconic film is being turned into a stage show named King Kong – Live on Stage and may well feature a full-sized Kong puppet as it is being put together by Global Creatures, who have previously had success with the Walking With Dinosaurs stage show.

“King Kong is the key character, who will have to command the stage and act alongside actors,” said puppeteer Steve Tilders.

The book will be written by Craig Lucas, while Marius de Vries will create the musical score.

Although the production has been announced it is still in its early days, with it not expected to open in the Australian city until early 2013.

People on flights to Melbourne before that date could instead entertain themselves by visiting one of the new pop up markets which are set to appear around the city as a showcase for the local craft community.
