Keep landmarks tidy urges tourism corporation
A new Clean India campaign has been created that aims to preserve the beauty of the country’s landmarks for future generations of tourists to enjoy.
The joint initiative between Prayas and the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) was launched at the Qutub Minar Unesco World Heritage Site in Delhi, News Track India reports.
At almost 250 ft high, the 12th century Qutub Minar is the tallest minaret in India and attracts as many as 25,000 visitors in a weekend – second only to the Taj Mahal.
However, according to Amod Kanth, the director of child rights organisation Prayas, tourists “have a tendency to litter the place and deface the monuments”.
“The campaign is aimed at creating an awareness among tourists that the monuments are their own property and they have to be involved in maintaining them,” he said.
Having begun at the Qutub Minar, the campaign will later move to the rest of the monuments in Delhi, before going nationwide.
