Have a look below at some of the best things to see and do in Oaxaca:

Things-to-See-and-Do-in-Oaxaca-Mexico

Monte Alban

The most prominent archaeological site in Mesoamerica, Monte Alban enjoys a beautiful location on a hilltop overlooking a valley. It lies eight kilometres west of Oaxaca City and is one of the oldest cities in Mesoamerica, renowned for its distinctive Mexican culture. Here tourists can have a 360 degree view of the site and the valley, climbing up to the highest point, a pyramid on the north platform.

The Zocalo

The main square in the central Mexico City, the Zocalo is one of the most happening places in Oaxaca. Lined by a number of cafes and restaurants on its three sides, and the government building, Palacio de Gobierno to the south, it is one place that is always crowded with tourists. Formally known as Plaza de la Constitucion, this historical site dates back to the time of the Aztecs and appeals to the visitors with its rich historical and cultural vibe. You can also explore Oaxaca’s cathedral and another plaza, the Alameda de Leon.

Handicraft Villages

There are several towns and villages surrounding Oaxaca City that are all renowned for their particular type of craft. From fanciful woodcarvings to pottery to colourful weavings, all kinds of handicrafts and folk art are produced in the villages. Here you can purchase art pieces made by skilled Oaxacan hands directly from the people who create them. Visit San Bartolo to find some interesting black pottery, Teotitlan del Valle to purchase woollen rugs and tapestries, and Arrazola or San Martin Tilcajeten to grab some amazing wood carvings.

The Tule Tree

Lying in the church grounds in the picturesque town of Santa Maria del Tule, the Tule Tree is the widest tree in the world. The tree trunk measures a staggering 120 feet in diameter and is the tree with greatest girth in the world. It was also placed on a UNESCO tentative list of World Heritage Sites in 2010. With many gardens and a small Mexican village nearby, this place makes for an ideal spot to relax, walk around and have a good time.

Mitla Archaeological Site

One of the best known ruins in Mexico, Mitla Archaeological Site is situated at an elevation of 4,855 ft on the eastern edge of a cold and high valley surrounded by the mountains of the Sierra Madre del Sur. Featuring geometrical patterns designed into the walls in a mosaic, this place is a sight to behold. It is located at a 40-minute drive east of Oaxaca City and was established as a sacred burial site long before the Christian era.
