Church Square
Church Square, the city centre of Pretoria, has significant historical value. There is a statue of Paul Kruher at the centre of the crossroads. It has been erected as a mark of respect for the late Boer leader who is also known as the Father of Afrikanerdom. There are various historical establishments in the vicinity such as the Palace of Justice, the Old Raadsaal, and the South African Reserve Bank amongst others.
Union Buildings
Designed by Sir Hebert Baker, the Union Buildings are a major attraction in Pretoria. Located on Church Street, the Union Buildings impress one and all with their strikingly beautiful architecture and artistry. Especially, the crescent edifice made of red sandstone, arrest one’s attention. The edifice also offers panoramic views of the city. The Union Buildings include the Pretoria War Memorial, Delville Wood Memorial, and the Garden of Remembrance.
The Voortrekker Monument
The colossal Voortrekker Monument is located in the southern part of Pretoria in Tshwane. The magnificent structure was built to commemorate the Pioneers or Voortrekkers who are known to have taken “The Great Trek” between 1835 and 1854. Its hilltop location allows you to see the magnificent monument from all four directions. A couple of things that make this place a must visit are the Cenotaph Hall, and the beautiful marble Frieze a bas-relief, illustrating the story of the great Trek.
