Booking a holiday abroad could be cheaper than opting for a break in the UK, it has been claimed.

This is according to Elizabeth Young, editor of family holiday guide Travel for Kids, who said that cheap flights can provide a welcome alternative to hitting the British motorways.

“It’s easy and cheap to go abroad. With inexpensive airlines, families can plan a weekend in Barcelona, for example, more easily than having to drive to the beach in the UK,” she commented.

Ms Young also remarked that savings could be made by choosing a package holiday over a multi-centre trip, as well as it being less stressful to plan.

According to research firm Ascent-MI, summer holiday bookings were up by one per cent in June 2008 in comparison with the same period last year, with all-inclusive deals also rising in popularity.

Anyone interested in booking flights to Dubai could benefit from news that the resort has fallen in the rankings of the world’s most expensive cities.

A study carried out by international consulting firm Mercer found that the city has fallen to number 52 on the list.
