The Atlantis Hotel resort in Dubai officially opened last night (November 20th) with a star-studded party and a fireworks display that its organisers claim could be seen from space.

Some 2,000 people, including those on holidays in Dubai, saw Kylie Minogue perform a special set, while Michelin-starred chefs and 1,000 waiters served up champagne, oysters, lobsters and a feast of other foods.

The £3 million fireworks display was said to be seven times bigger than the one that opened the Beijing Olympics.

Sol Kerzner, the chairman and chief executive officer of the firm that built Atlantis, said: “We’ve built something that’s quite extraordinary and we’ve got to tell the world about it.”

Celebrity guests present included Janet Jackson, Charlize Theron and Lindsay Lohan.

Atlantis opened for bookings on September 24th and has 1,539 rooms.

One of its top attractions is the Leap of Faith water slide, which drops people 27.5 metres before sending them through a transparent tunnel inside a shark-filled aquarium.
