Phuket is one of Thailand’s most visited holiday destinations and many people assume that it has been explored inside out. Well, this is just partly true. The island, from north to south, is packed with certain incredible hidden gems and alternative places that are indeed worth checking out. Take a look at our selection for attractions and activities from Phuket – some known and some not so well known.
Less Explored Beaches
Phuket brims with many beautiful beaches which remain relatively untouched and offer a tranquil environment. On the southern coast is Hat Nai Han, a small and peaceful tourist spot with fine dining restaurants set along the wonderful shore. Come here at dusk to relish spellbinding views of the sunset. Ao Sane is another small rocky beach on Phuket’s southwest coast that delights the visors with an excellent restaurant. This is also a great place to enjoy snorkelling. Hat Nai Yang and Hat Mai Khao are two other pristine, less explored beaches in Phuket.
Vantage Points
Phuket’s landscape features beautiful hills that boast superb views of the island and the ocean. Nestled atop Khao Rang is Tung Ka Café, a perfect place to savour delicious food, and gaze out over the urban parts of the province. Sip your favourite drink and enjoy scrumptious meals while experiencing a glorious sunset at Sabai Corner, a superb bar and restaurant. North of Phuket Provincial Hall is the island’s highest mountain, ‘Monkey Hill’, which offers great views of the coast. While hiking across the hill, stop at Green Forest Restaurant for a supper that includes traditional Thai dishes and seafood.
Art Scene
Art is another great facet of Phuket, which can be best experienced at its numerous museums and galleries. Sino-Portuguese architecture and Thai artwork are the main highlights of most repositories here. On the Pang-nga Road is Wua Art Gallery & Studio, home to some of Phuket’s most appealing modern artworks. Bo(ok)hemian Arthouse, a popular hangout in Phuket Town is an ideal location to admire the priceless work of several globally acclaimed artists. The gallery even features an excellent café.
Live Music
Phuket boasts numerous live music cafes and bars which aim to provide a platform to the local talent and showcase them to the world. On Kata Beach is the island’s most happening live music bar, Café Opera. The property serves an exciting menu of cocktails (mojitos being the most popular) and delicious Western and Thai food. The relaxed live music here aptly complements the great food and drinks which make it an ideal entertainment spot. Rockin’ Angels Blues Bar treats the guests with the tunes of smooth jams played by the bar’s resident musicians. This lively spot even invites customers to join the artists on stage.
