Holidaymakers thinking of booking a flight to India may wish to make sure they coincide with the Champakulam Boat Race in Alappuzha.

Taking place on July 6th this year, the event marks the start of a month of festivities in the region.

Event guide website WhatsOnWhen said: “The celebrations include spectacular water floats, decorated boats, Vanchipattu – the song of the oarsmen – and the thrilling Chundanvallom race.”

It added that the Chundans – snake boats – “are an impressive sight” as they can measure more than 100 feet long.

According to Alappuzha.com, the region is known as the Venice of the East and it is served by a large network of canals on the western coast of the Arabian Sea.

The Alappuzha region is also home to what it claims are the best ayurvedic rejuvenation centres in Kerala.

Another boat race – the Nehru Trophy Race – takes place in August every year and according to the tourist site, is not to be missed.
