There are subtle variations between the foods of different Indian regions, an expert has said
People travelling to India know that they are going to experience a diverse range of cultures – even if they just stay in one place.
Many of the major cities like Mumbai and Kolkata have a huge range of religious and traditional influences.
One way to sample the local customs is to pay particular attention to the food on offer, as there are subtle variations.
Manoj Aggarwal, editor of Indian travel blog TheOtherHome.com, said that spices – the ingredient most people associate with India – vary greatly across different customs.
He explained that foods that originate in the north, tend to be spicy red curries, while those that have their roots in the east are more likely to be sweet and this region also prepares great steamed seafood dishes.
“[South Indian meals] have fascinating varieties of rice preparations and for non-vegetarians, a variety of sea food,” he concluded.
