People on holidays to India next month may wish to head to Mumbai in order to take part in the annual Maharashtra Day celebrations.

The event will happen on May 1st and will see a multitude of special happenings going on in the city’s Shivaji Park.

This will include a salute by the governor of the state, a ceremonial parade – including members of Mumbai’s emergency services – and plenty of traditional performances by local people.

Maharashtra day commemorates the attainment of statehood in 1960, when Saurashtra was divided into two states based on language.

Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, is now one of India’s most important cities and houses some 14 million people. It is also one of the most popular destinations for tourists.

Maharashtra itself is one of the largest states in the country, both in size and population.

Flights to India are available from Etihad and Air India, among other carriers.
