Air India is planning to add new routes to its services to connect Chennai and Bangalore to the Lakshadweep islands.Starting on September 24th, the airline will begin offering travellers a service six days a week from Chennai to Agatti on the islands. It is hoped the new flight will further increase the range of domestic flights in India.”On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the flight will operate on the route Chennai-Kochi-Agatti-Kochi-Chennai and on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays the airline will operate on the route Chennai-Bangalore-Agatti-Bangalore-Chennai,” explained an Air India spokesperson.

It is expected that the new Air India service will also help and encourage the development of tourism on the islands and increased competition may lead to cheap flights to India destinations.

Delhi is set to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games next month and airlines such as Air India could see a rise in passengers looking for cheap flights to India.
