Families are increasingly choosing cheap holidays to Egypt for their half-term breaks.
The Egyptian resort of Sharm el Sheikh is fast becoming one of the most popular destinations for family holidays this half-term, according to one travel agent.
Bookings to the Red Sea resort for October half term are up by 142 per cent, compared to the same break last year.
The figures released by The Co-operative Travel also showed a significant fall in the price of holidays to Sharm, with the average cost of a family holiday falling by 20.7 per cent in comparison to October 2008.
Trevor Davis, director of retail distribution at The Co-operative Travel, commented: “Families are looking further afield for value for money. Resorts such as Sharm el Sheikh also benefit from having a large selection of all-inclusive hotels, so families can budget for their holidays before they travel.”
European destinations that have historically been popular among families, have been hit by the decline in the value of sterling, he said.
The pound hit a six-month low earlier in the month, with one euro equating in value to 93.8 pence.
