Peacock reserve also included in plans for Tamil Nadu town

An eco park is to be developed in the Indian town of Tiruparankundram, which lies close to the ‘Athens of the East’, Madurai in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

According to state tourism minister Gokula Indira the eco park will be opened shortly, the Times of India reports.

The developments in the town are also expected to include a reserve for peacocks.

Tamil Nadu lies at the southernmost tip of India and has a number of spectacular attractions including the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, the ‘Niagara of India’ the Hogenakkal Falls and the ornate rock cuttings at Mahabalipuram that date from the 7th century.

Madurai, the third largest city in the state, is known as the Athens of the East because of its historical heritage having been a major settlement for thousands of years.

Highlights include the 17th century Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal palace, with its spectacular columns and ornately carved stonework.
