Dubai International Airport could welcome more than 50 million passengers in 2011, according to airport officials.

Paul Griffiths, chief executive of the Dubai International Airport, is predicting that growth in passenger numbers could rise by 11 per cent over the next 12 months as more people takeĀ flights to Dubai.

In particular, last year’s introduction of 22 new routes from the airport by international carriers such as Garuda, Air Berlin, Kingfisher and China Eastern has helped to boost the region’s international profile.

“All of our 130 airlines are posting strong growth figures, and of course growth from our [local] airlines such as Emirates and flydubai is significant. They’re taking on more aircraft and more routes, forming the backbone of our growth,” he told Gulf News.

Last year, the airport handled a total of 47.2 million passengers – an increase of 15.3 per cent compared to 2009.

Dubai International Airport has two terminals, with a special shuttle bus linking the two directly to make transfers easier.
