People from the UK would rather reduce their outgoings on new clothes and socialising than give up plans for a break, for example, a holiday to South Africa.

This was the discovery of a recent poll by Avail Intelligence, cited by TravelMole, which showed that consumers would rather give up buying small, luxury items like DVDs than not travel at all this year, even though disposable income has reduced by 20 per cent for 42 per cent of the population.

Indeed, 59 per cent said they would be spending less on clothes and 41 per cent said they would avoid going out so much in order to conserve cash.

“While it is clear that consumers are feeling the effects of the recession, they are unwilling to give up their summer holidays just yet,” said Avail Intelligence founder Pontus Kristiansson.

According to Julian Neal, global marketing director at Travelex, more people may now choose holidays to South Africa as the pound is strong against the rand and therefore offers better value than the euro.
